After collecting my eyes from where they had rolled across the room, I suggested that those hours might be better spent doing something to prove that she was responsible enough to take care of said pet. She asked, like how? I said that step one would be to go on the internet and research what she wanted (sugar gliders): how much do they cost? What is proper bedding for them? What do they eat, and how often? Is there a vet nearby who knows how to treat them? What kind of regular care do they need? And then we made a list of all these costs added up and looked at them.
Cue the Smallest JackFace Evar(tm).
I then suggested that she could take the time normally spent practicing "cute begging face" in the mirror could be spent doing something to earn money to help. Such as, say, drawing, as she does a lot of the time? So the deal was brokered: she draws things, I put them on eBay, and see if she can stick with it to show she has the patience and responsibility to care for a high-maintenance pet.
IF anyone wants to see what is currently for sale, Here's the link. Because I like to help out any way I can. ;)
