First, by Ernest Hemingway, the only thing he wrote that I ever actually loved: "For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn."
The second is what has been recorded as one of the older and simplest horror stories ever written, from the pre-Victorian era: "He awoke frightened and reached for a match, and a match was put into his hand."
EDIT: This isn't a "hook" challenge: No matter how awesome they are, I don't want your first lines to a more extended story. Tell the ENTIRE tale in the one sentence. It's all you get. :)
