Okay... the B.S. Johnson hat is VERY APTLY NAMED. I could believe the bastard wrote this pattern. "La dee dah, we're going to start out nice and normal with a ribbed headband, then we're going to add a bit of shaping over on this end, and now we go SIDEWAYS!" Me: "Wait, WHAT?" I'm currently up to 6 double-pointed needles, 2 cable needles, and a crochet hook involved in this thing. I'm looking like a cross between my icon and the knitting scene from Spirited Away (which I have been astoundingly unable to find a still of, which makes me sad, since it's one of the most perfect depictions of "wrestling a hedgehog" knitting ever).
I am expecting it to set me on fire, eat my fingers, and/or serve me tea at any moment.
EDIT: And now that I've finally figured out how to re-cast on sideways whilst crocheting, now I can't figure out how to freaking well continue the cable pattern in the right direction! Forwards, backwards, inside-out, upside-down, it's all feeding the wrong way. AUUUGH!
EDIT 2: Oh, inside-out AND upside-down simultaneously. Of course. How silly of me. This is the motherfucking Lemarchant's Configuration of hats.
